You don't normally associate the Argentine capital with Hollywood movie directors, but Buenos Aires has long been a favored getaway for director Francis Ford Coppola who offers his own BA residence as a private hotel for the select few. Its location blends into the residential landscape of Palermo Soho amongst mature shade trees and grandmothers that still hang their laundry to dry on perfectly dilapidated balconies. It is here that a three-level townhouse known as Jardin Escondido is located within a light-filled space of terracotta floors and center courtyard painted the color of Argentine clay.
A small pool offers morning breakfast and afternoon dip when summer temperatures become too hot for the indoors as well as outdoor seating area where red wine from Napa and Mendoza flows like the Rio de Plata from an in-house sommelier. Not your typical public hotel, visitors can choose to rent half the hotel or the entire place for larger groups. The house is arranged in refurbished antiques with an authentic local flair that's not shy about using the color red. A permanent staff that includes chef, concierge and full-time housekeeper operates an in-house screening room with classic Coppola films.
The Room
A total of seven guest rooms are essentially divided to the paying public on a limited basis with those wishing to book the entire property having first priority. Light and airy rooms are lined in soothing terracotta floors with tall, white ceilings and furnishings one would expect to find in a period BA residence. Larger rooms benefit from upgraded design details like chunky seating areas and large wardrobes worthy of an actress’s Argentina getaway. All rooms feature iron windows and glimpse of interior or neighborhood green spaces that have been preserved even in this hippest of Buenos Aires neighborhoods.
